China Aims to Become Sustainable Marine Fuel Hub Amid IMO Emission Framework Delays
METHANOLAMMONIA
China is positioning itself as a sustainable marine fuel hub as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) delays negotiations on the Net-zero Framework aimed at reducing shipping emissions. Despite setbacks, China is advancing its shipping sector by promoting cleaner fuels like methanol and ammonia, exemplified by Shanghai's first ship-to-ship methanol bunkering in 2025 and new renewable methanol standards for the European market. The Chinese government is also incentivizing the construction of energy-efficient vessels to support its decarbonization efforts.
