Heidelberg Materials and Hartmann Group Develop 80% Emissions-Cutting Methanol-Powered Cement Carrier for Norway

METHANOL

Heidelberg Materials Northern Europe is developing an 80% emissions-cutting methanol-powered cement carrier, scheduled to enter service in early 2028. This initiative is part of a public-private partnership with the Hartmann Group, the Green Shipping Programme, and the Norwegian NOx Fund, aiming to decarbonize coastal logistics in Norway.

The vessel will have a cargo capacity of approximately 9,000 tons, carrying 1,000 tons more than its predecessor, and will utilize a dual-fuel methanol/diesel propulsion system. Financial support of NOK 60 million from the NOx Fund makes the project commercially viable.

This carrier will transport low-emission cement from Brevik to major Norwegian markets, improving transport efficiency while significantly reducing CO₂ emissions. The project underscores a collaborative effort in the maritime sector to innovate low-emission transport solutions.
