Maersk to Explore Ethanol as Alternative Fuel for Decarbonisation
METHANOLHYDROGEN
Maersk is investigating ethanol as an alternative fuel to support the shipping industry's decarbonisation efforts and reduce dependency on China, with CEO Vincent Clerc highlighting the global distribution of ethanol production, particularly in the US and Brazil. This move aims to encourage international collaboration on maritime decarbonisation, as the sector faces significant challenges requiring substantial investments in retrofitting and new vessels. Other companies, including Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line, are also exploring low-emission fuels, with plans for hydrogen-powered ships by 2027.
