Magnetite Expansion Project in Whyalla Secures Future of Steelmaking
GREEN STEEL
Early works for the Magnetite Expansion Project (MEP1) in Whyalla aim to secure magnetite supply for Whyalla Steelworks. With geotechnical drilling underway, the project will enable production of up to 2.5 million tonnes of magnetite annually, ensuring over 300 jobs and extending mine life by 20 years.
Funded by a $20 million loan from Australian and South Australian Governments, part of a $275 million package, the project aligns with the transition to green iron and steel. The Steelworks is also in the sale process with five shortlisted buyers.
