Microsoft Invests in 3.6 Million Metric Tons of CDR Through C2X's Beaver Lake Project in Louisiana

METHANOL

Microsoft has signed a carbon dioxide removal (CDR) deal with C2X, investing in 3.6 million metric tons of CDR over 12 years. The credits will be generated by C2X's Beaver Lake project in Louisiana, which will convert forestry residue into bio-methanol and biogenic CO2.

The project aims to produce over 500,000 metric tons of bio-methanol annually and capture around 1 million metric tonnes of CO2 each year, with the CO2 stored in secure geological formations. Construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2026, with operations launching in 2029. The project has an estimated total investment of $2.5 billion and will create up to 1,150 construction jobs and over 600 additional jobs, supporting the local forest industry and enhancing CO2 transportation and sequestration efforts in Louisiana.
