Network Rail Initiates Sea Defence Project at Folkestone's The Warren with 18,000 Tonnes of Rock Deliveries

NOVEL RENEWABLE ENERGY

Network Rail is conducting major sea defence repairs at Folkestone's The Warren, with rock deliveries commencing as part of a long-planned coastal protection project. Initiated in September, the work has resulted in the closure of part of the beach and cliffside walkway until March 2026 for public safety.

Over 18,000 tonnes of rock armour will be installed to absorb wave energy, protect against erosion, and stabilize the railway line between Folkestone and Dover. Repairs also include drainage systems and the installation of 50 steel sheet piles.

Deliveries by barge are aimed at minimizing disruption. Trains will continue to operate, and a signed diversion is in place for walkers. The site has a history of instability, with significant engineering works last taking place in the 1930s. The project is expected to be completed by March 2026.
