Northumbrian Water Installs Eel Screens in River Tyne as Part of £11M Environmental Program
FLOW CONTROL
Northumbrian Water has installed two eel screens at the Ovingham pumping station on the River Tyne, part of an £11m initiative to protect European eels. Additional screens will be installed this month.
The project aims to improve fish passage and river health while modernizing the pumping station and maintaining water supply. European eels are critically endangered, with populations declining by 90-95% since the 1980s. The program is part of a broader investment plan of £4.5b in the North East from 2025 to 2030.
