Reflections on the Impact of War and Unity in South Sudan’s Liberation Struggle
In 1988-1989, troops from the Intifadha Battalion, commanded by Salva Kiir Mayardit, were stationed in Yirol before being deployed to Rumbek. These troops were well-equipped with military vehicles and heavy weaponry.
Local soldiers and community members, including a soldier named Makuei and a singer named Makuen-Gok, left a lasting impression. Injured soldiers were treated at Yirol Hospital, where many were housed in the author's home.
The author formed friendships with these soldiers and other local boys. The liberation struggle fostered strong bonds among diverse communities across South Sudan, but these connections fractured quickly after independence.
The author reflects on the sacrifices made and questions the government's commitment to honoring fallen heroes. He calls for improved living conditions for all citizens, emphasizing the importance of peace and development over conflict.
