Sault Ste. Marie Charities Brace for Impact of 1,000 Steelworker Layoffs at Algoma Steel

GREEN STEEL

Charitable organizations in Sault Ste. Marie are concerned about the impact of layoffs affecting over 1,000 steelworkers at Algoma Steel, forecasting a significant reduction in community donations. The Soup Kitchen Community Centre's executive director, Ron Sim, emphasized that the layoffs, driven by economic pressures and a shift to Electric Arc Furnace technology, will adversely impact many non-profits reliant on support from steelworkers.

Other organizations, including Algoma Residential Community Hospice and Women in Crisis Algoma, also rely on donations from these workers. While some steelworkers are expected to return next year and additional jobs are anticipated for the new technology, the immediate effects on financial contributions from laid-off workers are uncertain. Mayor Matthew Shoemaker acknowledged the long-standing support of steelworkers to the community and noted that the city will work to address the impending challenges, including economic diversification initiatives.
