Ship Orders for Alternative Fuels Decline Nearly 50% in 2025, Led by LNG

In 2025, orders for alternative-fuel vessels plummeted by 47% to 275, amid a significant decline in newbuild orders from 4,405 in 2024 to 2,403. LNG vessels led the market with 188 orders, while methanol orders fell to 61 and LPG and ethane tanker orders dropped by 73%. Despite this downturn, investment in fuel infrastructure persisted, with 22 LNG bunker vessels ordered and wind-assisted propulsion systems installed on 24 ships.
