ABB and HDF Energy Partner to Develop High-Power Fuel Cells for Large Maritime Vessels
ABB and HDF Energy have signed a joint-development agreement to create high-power fuel cell units for marine applications, targeting megawatt-scale installations on larger vessels such as container feeder ships and liquefied hydrogen carriers. The project follows a memorandum of understanding from 2020 and aims for pilot installations in 2028-2029 and serial production in 2030.
HDF will provide the fuel cell technology, while ABB will supply power converters and manage electrical systems. The collaboration intends to replace diesel generators on existing ships with hydrogen fuel cells, significantly reducing maritime emissions. The new system is expected to enhance operational range and flexibility and may support shore power applications, addressing peak power demands in ports.
