ADB and Mongolia Launch Grassland Carbon Restoration Pilot Project

CARBON CAPTURE

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Mongolia have initiated a pilot project focused on restoring grassland carbon and enhancing resilience through international carbon markets. The Grassland Carbon Restoration Project aims to generate carbon credits by improving livestock grazing and grassland management, providing carbon finance to restore degraded rangelands and combat desertification.

The project will implement methodologies for measuring soil organic carbon and establish a monitoring system in accordance with international standards. ADB will collaborate with local herder communities and relevant ministries to support climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and rural livelihood diversification. The initiative is designed to prepare Mongolia for participation in international carbon markets under the Paris Agreement and will inform future carbon credit project designs.
