Akuo Energy and Voltalia Launch Renewable Projects in New Caledonia and French Guiana

ENERGY STORAGE

Akuo Energy and Voltalia have initiated renewable energy projects in New Caledonia and French Guiana. New Caledonia aims for a 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2035, particularly in its nickel mining sector, with a goal to replace half of fossil fuel energy at metallurgical sites with renewables.

The project, costing around CFP9 billion (US$82 million), was awarded to Akuo in August 2023 after a proposal call by the local agency. Financing involves a public-private partnership with several financial institutions.

Indigenous communities also have stakes in the project. Meanwhile, Voltalia has started site preparation for a solar-plus-storage project in French Guiana, featuring 43MW of solar PV and 43MW/135MWh of battery storage, with commissioning expected in 2028.
