Barcelona Deploys Dance Robots to Support Elderly Residents in Cognitive Decline

ROBOTICS

Irene Veglison, 67, received a dance robot named Sandi as part of a pilot project in Barcelona aimed at assisting elderly individuals experiencing cognitive decline. The initiative, supported by a €3.8 million EU recovery fund, has deployed 600 robots in homes and care centers.

These robots, manufactured by Misty Robotics and distributed by Grup Saltó, are designed to improve teleassistance and detect emergencies. Spain faces a growing elderly population, with nearly 2 million seniors living alone, prompting a need for expanded long-term care workforce.
