Calibrant and Aligned Launch Innovative BESS Project for PGE's Data Center
Calibrant is developing a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) for Aligned's data center, which aims to convert the facility from a potential grid liability to a valuable asset for utility Portland General Electric (PGE). The BESS, which will ramp up to full power, is part of PGE's Dispatchable Standby Generation program, allowing PGE to utilize controllable resources during critical grid periods.
The project is fully funded by Aligned and Calibrant, minimizing costs for ratepayers. The BESS will be front-of-meter rather than behind-the-meter, which simplifies engineering and interconnection. Tesla is supplying the BESS technology, alongside locally-made Tier 1 transformers to meet investment tax credit requirements. The collaboration between Calibrant, Aligned, and PGE emphasizes innovation in addressing rapid load growth, supported by recent directives from the Secretary of Energy to expedite interconnection processes for large loads.
