CATL to Begin Large-Scale Production of Sodium-Ion Batteries by 2026

ENERGY STORAGE

CATL, the largest battery manufacturer globally, plans to initiate large-scale production of sodium-ion batteries by 2026, targeting applications in transportation, electric vehicles, and energy storage systems. The sodium-ion batteries, which offer advantages like a wide operational temperature range and lower production costs, have been developed under the brand Naxtra and can achieve a range of 500 km with an energy density of 175 kWh/kg. Despite their lower energy density leading to larger sizes, these batteries meet the upcoming Chinese national standards for electric vehicle batteries.
