Centrica and X Energy have signed a joint development agreement to advance plans for a small modular reactor (SMR) project at the Hartlepool site, aiming for nearly 1 GW of capacity. The project, which is aligned with the UK's nuclear policy, could add up to 960 MW and is expected to begin operations in the mid-2030s.

The partnership represents a broader transatlantic alliance, with potential economic value exceeding $12 billion. Centrica plans to initiate full-scale activities by 2026, while also discussing collaboration with additional partners and engineering firms.
