Centrica and X Energy have entered a joint development agreement to deploy advanced modular reactors (AMRs) in the UK, targeting the Hartlepool site for initial development. The project aims to deliver up to 6 gigawatts of clean energy, create significant economic value, and enhance energy security.
With the existing nuclear station set to retire in 2028, the new reactors could power 1.5 million homes and support industrial heat needs. Full-scale construction is planned for 2026, pending regulatory approvals, with the first generation of electricity expected in the mid-2030s.
