China Proposes Decarbonization Strategy Transitioning Coal Plants to Nuclear Power

NUCLEAR

The China Energy Engineering Group Co. (CEEC) has announced a decarbonization strategy to convert retiring coal-fired power plants into nuclear facilities. This "coal to nuclear" (C2N) initiative aims to leverage existing infrastructure to expedite the construction of new reactors, with approximately 100 GW of coal capacity set for retirement in the next five years. The plan supports China's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060 and positions the nation to enhance its nuclear capabilities, with projections of surpassing the U.S. in nuclear power generation by 2030.
