Construction Approved for $209 Million Armidale Battery Energy Storage System

ENERGY STORAGE

The $209 million Armidale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), capable of supplying power to 60,000 homes during peak times, has been approved for construction by Valent Energy Developments. The 150 megawatt / 437 megawatt-hour facility will store excess energy from the grid and rapidly supply power during high-demand periods.

The project will create 100 construction jobs and provide over $2.5 million to Armidale Regional Council for community projects. Additionally, under a Voluntary Planning Agreement, Valent will contribute $1.275 million upfront and another $1.275 million over the project's lifespan, alongside $400,000 annually for the New England Rail Trail over 20 years. This initiative is part of the government’s push for renewable energy, with 40 projects approved under the Minns Government, including 17 large-scale batteries.
