Croatia Considers Modular Nuclear Reactor at Fianona Coal Power Plant Site

WIND ENERGYDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREFUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

The long-term energy development strategy in Croatia is revisiting the possibility of constructing a small modular reactor (SMR) at the Fianona coal-fired power plant site, which is set for decommissioning in the coming years. This topic was discussed at a roundtable on energy prospects and regional economic challenges, featuring national experts.

The existing energy infrastructure in the Fianona Gulf is seen as a technical advantage, but any decision would require thorough safety and environmental impact analyses, particularly concerning groundwater studies and karst terrain. The SMR option may be considered only after 2035, likely around 2040.

Professor Davor Grgic highlighted the long development history of SMR technology, noting its benefits over solar and wind power, including consistent energy supply and reduced land use. The Istria region's need for stable electricity supply for industries and data centers was also addressed, with officials stating all energy options are evaluated in line with long-term strategies and European policies.

The Fianona coal plant, with a nominal capacity of 210 MW, is scheduled to close in 2033, as per Croatia's energy transition plan, supported by European funds. Local environmental groups are advocating for earlier decommissioning.
