Cyprus Plans Seven New Desalination Plants by 2026 Amid Ongoing Water Crisis
WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION
Cyprus is in its fourth consecutive year of reduced rainfall, with water reserves at 14% capacity. The Water Development Department has called for a 10% reduction in water consumption to manage supply issues.
The government plans to build seven new desalination plants by the end of 2026, increasing total capacity by 66% to secure water supply. Current consumption rates exceed European averages, and the severity of drought conditions is prompting urgent measures.
