Discovery of Lake Neuron, World's Largest Underground Thermal Lake, Beneath Albania

Lake Neuron, the largest known underground thermal lake, is located 127 meters deep in southern Albania's Vromoner region. Measuring 138.3 meters long and 42 meters wide, it has a volume of about 8,335 cubic meters.

Discovered by the Czech Speleological Society, the expedition utilized GeoSlam technology and was funded by the Neuron Foundation. The lake exhibits unique geological and biological features, including sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms and a significant spider colony. The area is not currently protected and straddles the Albania-Greece border.
