EMT Madrid and Irizar e-Mobility Launch Pilot for Second-Life Battery Energy Storage System

ENERGY STORAGE

Irizar e-mobility, EMT Madrid, and Iberdrola have initiated a pilot project to repurpose electric bus batteries for energy storage at EMT's Fuencarral operations center. This initiative aims to extend the lifespan of batteries that have reached the end of their first life, aligning with Irizar's commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.

Funded under the PERTE VEC (CAPITAL) program, the project involves a static energy storage system with a capacity of 1 MWh and a power output of 500 kW, utilizing fifteen battery racks from three decommissioned Irizar e-mobility buses. The system is integrated into EMT Madrid's smart charging infrastructure, optimizing energy costs and enhancing the use of renewable energy. The batteries are charged during off-peak hours to minimize energy expenses and manage power demand effectively.
