EPA Grants Arizona Authority to Regulate Underground Injection Wells, Advancing Carbon Capture Initiatives
CARBON CAPTURE
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finalized a rule allowing Arizona to oversee all classes of underground injection wells under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This designation makes Arizona the fifth state to manage Class VI wells, crucial for carbon dioxide storage in carbon capture and storage projects.
The decision aims to enhance state management of water resources while promoting economic growth and carbon management. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will now issue permits, streamlining the regulatory process and encouraging private investment in CCS technologies.
