Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, emphasized the necessity of nuclear energy for Türkiye during the Gastech 2025 forum in Milan. He urged the country to diversify its energy sources by collaborating internationally on nuclear projects, including small modular reactors.

Birol highlighted the ongoing construction of Türkiye's first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu and the goal of achieving 5 gigawatts in small modular reactor capacity by 2050. He noted Türkiye's strategic location and infrastructure, which position it as a potential energy supplier while acknowledging its ongoing reliance on imported oil and gas.
