Flatiron Energy Proposes 140-Megawatt Battery Farm in New Milford Amid Local Concerns
Flatiron Energy plans to construct a 140-megawatt energy storage battery farm in New Milford, capable of powering tens of thousands of homes for several hours. The proposal has faced opposition from local residents and officials concerned about safety and environmental impacts.
Flatiron's representatives claim the project will enhance local electrical capacity and is less impactful than alternative developments, such as housing. However, residents expressed skepticism about benefits to the community beyond tax revenue and raised concerns over potential battery fires and effects on sensitive land near the West Aspetuck River.
The Connecticut Siting Council will ultimately decide on the proposal. Flatiron is also developing a 200-megawatt battery farm in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, with a completion goal for New Milford by mid-to-late 2028. A public hearing is anticipated in summer 2026.
