Fortescue's Green Pioneer Recognized by TIME, Plans Ammonia Engine Transition by 2030

HYDROGENAMMONIA

Fortescue's Green Pioneer was named one of TIME's Best Inventions of 2025. The transition from a diesel-electric power system to dual-fuel ammonia began in 2022 at Fortescue's Perth facility in Australia.

Fortescue Shipping, which owns the Green Pioneer and eight other ore carriers, aims to retrofit its fleet with ammonia engines by 2030. The company has a Net Zero target for Scope 3 emissions by 2040. Fortescue is implementing a decarbonized approach in mining, with plans for battery electric vehicles and renewable energy-powered ore processing by 2030.

Its Green Metal project will produce low-emission metals using renewable energy and green hydrogen. A report indicates that battery-electric trucks will achieve cost parity with diesel by 2026, green ammonia for fertilizers will be competitively priced in India by 2026, and green hydrogen-based steelmaking may be cheaper than fossil alternatives by the early 2030s.
