Gasunie and Thyssengas Initiate Dutch-German Hydrogen Pipeline Collaboration

HYDROGENNATURAL GAS

Gasunie and Thyssengas have signed an agreement to develop cross-border hydrogen pipelines, repurposing existing natural gas infrastructure for hydrogen transport. The network will link the Netherlands and Germany at Oude Statenzijl and Vlieghuis, facilitating hydrogen trade crucial for the north-western European market.

Thyssengas commenced construction of a 53-km pipeline from Vlieghuis to Ochtrup, expected to be operational by 2027. Germany plans to build a 9,040-km hydrogen core grid by 2032, with 60% of it using converted natural gas pipelines, and has set access fees at €25/kWh/h/year.

Concurrently, the Netherlands is developing a 1,200-km hydrogen pipeline network, with the first section in Rotterdam expected to start operations in 2026. BNetzA has refined pricing for the hydrogen core network to enhance cost transparency and support early utilization.
