Gauteng Implements SEZs to Enhance Manufacturing and Export Growth
The Provincial Government of Gauteng is establishing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in each of its five development corridors to stimulate manufacturing, exports, and employment. The GGDA aims to integrate these into a multi-tier SEZ framework within the Gauteng City Region (GCR).
Initiatives include agro-parks and industrial parks to strengthen township economies. The OR Tambo SEZ focuses on export-oriented industries near OR Tambo International Airport and has supported a major food factory since 2019.
Upcoming clusters in medical, pharmaceutical, and aviation sectors are planned. The West Rand SEZ aims to diversify the economy amidst declining mining output. The Lanseria Smart City project envisions a mixed-use development linked to an expanded Gautrain system. The Vaal SEZ, with R2 billion in investments, targets sectors like hydrogen value chains, renewable energy manufacturing, and logistics.
