GEBE Seeks Land for First Solar Project in St. Maarten Amid Renewable Energy Efforts
GEBE has requested land to develop its first solar project in St. Maarten, indicating progress towards renewable energy targets despite previous electricity crises. The Ministry of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure is reviewing the request.
A study by Energynautics, financed by a Trust Fund, suggests solar panels are a more attractive investment than Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). A prior report by TNO focused on energy transition strategies and dismissed offshore wind energy due to challenges such as hurricanes and low wind speeds.
Both Energynautics and TNO advocate for expanding solar PV projects as a viable solution. However, the lack of a buyback scheme for excess electricity produced by decentralized solar systems could impede growth.
Currently, systems over 500 kVA require GEBE's approval. Previous attempts to secure land for solar installations have faced government resistance.
