Georgia Power Receives Second Mitsubishi Gas Turbine at Plant Yates for Expanded Capacity
Georgia Power announced the arrival of the second of three Mitsubishi Power natural gas turbines at Plant Yates in Coweta County, Georgia. The first turbine arrived in August, with the third scheduled for early 2026.
All three turbines are expected to be operational by 2027, providing a total capacity of 1,300 megawatts. Approved by the Georgia Public Service Commission, these turbines will help meet increasing energy demand in Georgia.
They are capable of operating on oil as a backup and may utilize a hydrogen mix for reduced carbon emissions. Each turbine weighs nearly 350 tons and features improved efficiency and output compared to older models, allowing for faster startups and better response to electricity demand changes.
The expansion is projected to create 600 construction jobs and 15 permanent positions, increasing the workforce at the plant to approximately 75 full-time employees. Natural gas accounts for 40% of Georgia Power's annual generation.
