Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation Releases Findings on Long-Term Biodiesel Use in Shipping
BIOFUELS
The Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) has published its findings from Project Lotus, a six-month trial assessing the long-term impact of a B24 biodiesel blend on vessel operations. Conducted in partnership with NYK Line, the study revealed that engine performance remained comparable to that of very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), with no significant wear on engine components. The report indicates that biodiesel can be safely utilized in shipping without major operational cost increases, provided proper maintenance practices are followed, supporting the industry's decarbonization efforts.
