Indigenous leaders from around the world gathered in Jakarta, Indonesia, from January 26 to 29 to form a pact against the expansion of nickel mining, which threatens traditional territories and isolated indigenous peoples. Organized by AMAN, the event resulted in the Jakarta Charter, advocating for free, prior, informed consent for projects on indigenous lands and calling for a moratorium on mining in areas inhabited by vulnerable populations. The declaration aims to raise awareness and prompt action from international bodies regarding the detrimental impacts of mining linked to energy transition.
