H2GLASS Project Develops Hydrogen Solutions for Glass Industry Decarbonization
H2GLASS is focused on decarbonizing the glass industry through 100% hydrogen combustion, enhancing safety, maintenance, and product quality. This initiative is part of Europe's goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, utilizing renewable hydrogen for high-temperature process heat without carbon emissions.
The project involves creating a technology stack, including innovative burner and furnace designs, for glass manufacturers to implement hydrogen combustion. Testing will occur with five glass industry demonstrators and one from the aluminum sector.
Key challenges include optimizing the hydrogen combustion process to reduce NOx emissions and ensuring a reliable supply of green hydrogen. H2GLASS has analyzed factors affecting hydrogen supply system performance to aid in system design decisions, employing a structured methodological approach that includes system definition and supply alternatives like on-site PEM electrolysis and high-pressure truck delivery.
