Hampyeong County Launches 4-Stage Forest Restoration and Carbon Storage Project Post-Wildfire

CARBON CAPTURE

Hampyeong County in South Jeolla Province is implementing a new forest policy to restore 641 hectares of land affected by a massive wildfire in April 2023. The county has established a 'Basic Plan for Rapid Restoration and Improvement of Forest Fire-Stricken Areas' and is initiating a four-stage afforestation project starting in 2024.

By December 2023, approximately 1.6 billion won will be invested to plant 211,565 trees across 173 hectares. A key component of this initiative is the creation of a 'carbon storage forest' on a 3-hectare site within Daedongje Ecological Park, aimed at enhancing carbon absorption and biodiversity.

This project, part of the 'Hampyeong Green Project,' is expected to absorb about 23.67 tons of carbon annually and reduce fine dust by 0.05 tons. Funded by the Korea Forest Service, the total budget for the project is 3 billion won, including 1.5 billion won in national funding.
