Holcim and 44.01 Launch CO2 Capture and Mineralization Pilot Project in UAE
Holcim and 44.01 have launched a pilot project in the UAE to capture and mineralize CO2 from cement production. The project, based in Fujairah, aims to capture five tons of CO2 per day from a cement plant and store it in local rock formations for permanent mineralization.
Cement production is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions, generating over 900 kg of CO2 for every 1,000 kg of cement produced. This initiative, which utilizes Shell's CANSOLV carbon capture technology, is part of Holcim's NextGen Growth 2030 strategy and supports the UAE's Net Zero 2050 pathway. It also marks 44.01's first collaboration with an industrial customer, demonstrating potential scalable carbon reduction pathways through industry cooperation.
