Humboldt County Supervisors Pass Regional Climate Action Plan and Set Greenhouse Gas Emissions Threshold

CARBON CAPTURE

The Humboldt County Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted the Regional Climate Action Plan (RCAP) to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The plan aims to cut emissions to 40% below 1990 levels by 2026 and 85% by 2045, achieving carbon neutrality.

Additionally, a GHG threshold was established for new development projects, set at 35% lower than RCAP levels, applicable unless projects commence after 2030. The RCAP outlines 12 strategies focusing on transportation, land use planning, and improving energy efficiency.

In 2022, Humboldt County emitted approximately 1.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, primarily from road transportation. The plan includes measures for carbon storage, energy efficiency in water systems, and waste reduction. Public comments largely supported the RCAP, leading to the board's final approval of the plan and GHG threshold.
