Imperial County Begins Review of $10 Billion Data Center Campus by Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing

ENERGY STORAGEDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Imperial County has initiated the technical review of a proposed $10 billion data center campus by Imperial Valley Computer Manufacturing, LLC (IVCM) on approximately 74.33 acres near the city of Imperial. The project aims to create a Level 4 hyperscale data center capable of supporting advanced AI and cloud computing, featuring a 950,000-square-foot facility with 330 MW capacity and an 862 MWh battery energy storage system.

The project has received a leveling permit exempt from extensive environmental review under California's CEQA. However, concerns have arisen from the city regarding its fragmented approval process. The IID will temporarily procure electricity from the wholesale market for the campus while securing long-term contracts.

The investment is expected to generate significant economic benefits, including $72.5 million in IT equipment sales tax and $28.75 million annually in property taxes, while also attracting other tech companies. Further infrastructure improvements and additional public hearings are required as the project progresses.
