India Launches First Indigenous Hydrogen-Powered Water Taxi Service in Varanasi

HYDROGEN

India has launched its first indigenous hydrogen-powered water taxi service in Varanasi, inaugurated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on December 10, 2025. The service operates between Ravidas Ghat and Namo Ghat, with plans to extend to Asi Ghat and Markandeya Dham.

Constructed at Cochin Shipyard, the water taxi features vegetarian refreshments, CCTV surveillance, and bio-toilets, accommodating up to 50 passengers. It operates about 7-8 round trips daily, powered by a hybrid electric-hydrogen engine with zero emissions.

The vessel includes five hydrogen cylinders and can reach speeds of 12.038 km/h, with solar panels installed. Current ticket prices are approximately Rs 500 for a one-way trip. There are no fare concessions for students, senior citizens, or people with disabilities at this time.
