India Remediates 44% of Identified Dumpsites, Reclaims 7,900 Acres of Land
As of December 11, 2025, 44% of identified dumpsites for remediation in India have been cleared, reclaiming approximately 7,900 acres of land. Union Minister Tokhan Sahu reported that 15.20 crore metric tons (MT) of waste, or 61%, has been remediated from 1,096 dumpsites.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0, central assistance is allocated for various waste management projects, including waste-to-energy plants. Approved action plans include 4,462 tonnes per day (TPD) for waste-to-electricity and 8,701.50 TPD for bio-methanation, with a total project cost of Rs 2,318 crore.
Currently, 16 waste-to-electricity plants (18,900 TPD) are operational, and six (5,550 TPD) are under construction. Additionally, 500 new 'waste-to-wealth' plants will be established under the GOBARdhan scheme, with 145 compressed biogas plants and 17 bio-methanation plants currently operational.
