Keir Starmer Highlights Job Potential at Grangemouth Following Oil Refinery Closure
Sir Keir Starmer stated that Grangemouth has significant potential for job creation following the recent closure of its oil refinery, which resulted in 400 redundancies. He noted that the government has invested a £100 million support package for the local workforce and announced an additional £200 million from the National Wealth Fund for co-investment with the private sector.
This initiative has generated approximately 100 inquiries from private companies. Furthermore, over £14 million was allocated in the recent budget to support viable projects. Starmer emphasized the importance of quickly transitioning these inquiries into job opportunities, particularly in areas like carbon capture, asserting that Grangemouth's future is promising and not destined for decline.
