The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) and Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) have made a groundbreaking advancement in nuclear-powered LNG shipping by obtaining Approval in Principle (AIP) for a carrier featuring a small modular molten salt reactor (MSR). Announced at Gastech 2025 in Milan, Italy, this design meets international safety regulations and is lauded for its safety and energy efficiency. The MSR can operate without fuel replacement throughout its lifespan, potentially lowering costs and enhancing efficiency in maritime shipping.
