Korea has joined the Partnership for a Carbon-Free Coal Alliance at COP in Belem, Brazil, committing to phase out coal power alongside 62 other countries. Chungcheongnam-do Province, the first Asian local government to join the Powering Past Coal Alliance, is implementing low-carbon projects and has pledged not to build new coal plants without greenhouse gas reduction technology. Gyeonggi-do Province, also a member, aims for 100% renewable energy by 2050 and plans to increase renewable generation capacity significantly, with central government support for job security in coal-affected areas.
