Kuva Space and WWF Indonesia Launch Initiative to Monitor Blue Carbon Ecosystems Using AI and Satellite Data

CARBON CAPTURE

Kuva Space and WWF Indonesia have launched an initiative utilizing satellite data and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor and measure the potential of Indonesia's blue carbon ecosystems. The collaboration focuses on mapping seagrass and mangrove habitats in priority restoration areas in Alor, East Nusa Tenggara, and Berau, East Kalimantan.

The blue carbon market, which emphasizes the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems, is rapidly growing due to increasing government and investor interest. Currently, blue carbon projects account for only 0.91% of the total carbon credits in Indonesia's voluntary carbon market.

The mapping results will provide a transparent foundation for blue carbon accounting, policy planning, and sustainable financing. This initiative also supports Indonesia's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and aligns with the priorities of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and the East Nusa Tenggara provincial government.
