L.A. County Firefighters Union Raises Safety Concerns Over Battery Storage Facilities
ENERGY STORAGE
The Firefighters Local 1014 union has issued a cease and desist notice to L.A. County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone, raising safety concerns about battery-energy storage systems (BESS) near residential areas, particularly a proposed facility next to a fire station in Industry.
The union's alarm follows past incidents involving lithium-ion facilities, as L.A. County reviews these concerns amid ongoing battery storage developments in Canyon Country and Castaic. Residents have also expressed worries about the proximity of such facilities to fire stations, while a proposed ordinance for best practices in BESS siting is still in draft form, pending environmental review.
