Lake Mornos Water Levels Remain Below Average Despite Recent Rainfall in Greece

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

Lake Mornos's surface area is 13 km² as of February 21, 2026, 26% below the average since 2006. While rainfall in Western Central Greece has improved water reserves to approximately 683.5 million cubic meters, experts warn against complacency due to the persistence phenomenon of droughts.

Increased rainfall this year does not eliminate the risk of future water scarcity, especially in islands with limited resources. A shift towards risk management and comprehensive planning is necessary to ensure long-term water resilience.
