Lower Similkameen Indian Band Calls for Protection of Endangered Similkameen River Amid Mine Expansion Concerns
STRATEGIC MINERALS
The Lower Similkameen Indian Band (LSIB) is advocating for the protection of nməlqytkʷ (Similkameen River), recently listed as one of B.C.'s most endangered rivers by the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. (ORCBC).
Concerns arise over the proposed expansion of the Copper Mountain Mine by Hudbay Minerals, which may further pollute the river. The LSIB emphasizes the river's critical importance to the sməlqmíx people, highlighting environmental health over economic benefits. The provincial government has yet to make a decision regarding the mine's expansion.
