Morocco Leads Greenpeace Energy Sovereignty Index Ahead of Egypt and Tunisia

HYDROGEN

Morocco scored 5.5 out of 10 in Greenpeace's energy sovereignty index, surpassing Egypt and Tunisia due to significant investments in solar and wind projects. These renewables currently supply approximately 20% of the nation's electricity and meet 10% of overall energy needs, with 26% of electricity demand covered by renewables.

Despite this progress, Morocco's energy sovereignty is challenged by heavy reliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil, and limited domestic gas and oil production. Greenpeace highlighted Morocco's ambition to be a regional clean energy and green hydrogen hub, while noting that reducing import dependence is essential for true energy sovereignty.
