Navajo Nation Approves Solar Project Amid Community Concerns Over Environmental Impact
ENERGY STORAGEDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
The Navajo Nation Council's Resources and Development Committee has approved a 750-megawatt solar and battery storage project on a 4,500-acre lease, despite community concerns about environmental impacts and the proximity to an unremediated uranium mine. Local residents have criticized the approval process for a lack of transparency and oversight, as the project is expected to export most of its power outside the Navajo Nation. The lease is set for 25 years, with potential renewal, and will be operated by AES Clean Energy in partnership with Painted Desert Power Solar Site LLC and Navajo Power.
